Critical Incident
Scribe Course

The 5-day Critical Incident Scribe course prepares participants to
fulfill the specialized role of the Scribe during a critical incident.
A Scribe is an integral role within the Emergency Response Team
and is responsible for taking the notes of the Critical Incident
Commander (“CIC”). A Scribe will capture critical event information
and the decision-making process of the CIC during fast-moving
and high-pressure events.

Through a blend of instruction, guided practice, and scenario-based
training, participants will learn how to create an accurate
chronological record of a CIC’s oversight of an event from start to
finish. This includes accurately documenting the decisions,
rationale, recording incoming intelligence, maintaining SMEAC
boards, and ensuring all taskings and communications are
properly tracked.

A well-trained Scribe is essential to the integrity and accountability
of critical incidents. The ability to capture precise, defensible notes
supports operational efficiency and provides critical documentation
for post-incident review, debriefings, potential legal or civil
proceedings, coroner’s inquests, police reviews and investigations.

The Scribe Course will be taught by experienced Scribe Team Leaders
and experienced Critical Incident Commanders. Participants
will complete a final assessment on the last day of the course.
