Executive Leadership During Critical Incidents
Major incidents place extraordinary demands on police executive leadership. While operational commanders direct the tactical response, Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs, and Executive Leadership Teams are simultaneously responsible for strategic decision-making, governance, public confidence, political relationships, organizational resilience, and supporting the people entrusted to manage the crisis.
The Brownstone Tactical Group Executive Commander Course IC-600 has been developed specifically for police executives. Designed for Superintendents and above, this four-day program examines the leadership responsibilities before, during, and after Canada's most significant policing crises.
Through detailed case studies presented by the executives who led them, participants will gain an unprecedented behind-the-scenes perspective into the decisions, challenges, successes, and lessons learned from major incidents including mass casualty events, terrorism, kidnappings, and large-scale public disorder.
Presentations include executive leadership perspectives from the James Smith Cree Nation mass casualty, the BMO terrorism shooting, the Ottawa Freedom Convoy protests, and kidnap debriefs. The course also features experts from a communication firm and the intelligence community to discusses crisis communication strategies and inter-agency collaboration before and during major events.
More than a review of historical incidents, IC-600 is focused on executive preparedness. Participants will examine how Executive Leadership Teams establish governance, develop relationships with critical partners, prepare their organizations, oversee strategic decision-making during rapidly evolving events, and effectively communicate with governments, police boards, employees, the media, and the communities they serve.
Every major incident ultimately becomes a leadership test. The organizations that perform best are rarely those improvising under pressure—they are those whose executive teams have invested in preparation long before the crisis begins.
IC-600 provides police executives with the practical knowledge, contemporary case studies, and executive-level framework necessary to lead confidently through the most complex and consequential events their organizations may ever face.
